Waves on unsteady currents

چکیده
Models for surface gravity wave propagation in the presence of currents often assume the current field to be quasi-stationary, which implies that the absolute wave frequency is time invariant. However, in the presence of unsteady currents or time-varying water depth, linear wave theory predicts a time variation of the absolute wave frequency and wavenumber . Herein, observations of wave frequency modulations from a large-scale laboratory experiment are presented. In this case, the modulations are caused by both unsteady depths and unsteady currents due to the presence of low-frequency standing waves. These new observations allow a unique and detailed verification of the theoretical predictions regarding variations in the absolute wave frequency. In addition, analytic solutions for the variations in frequency and wave height induced by the unsteady medium are found through a perturbation analysis. These solutions clarify the dependency of the wave frequency/wave height modulations on the characteristics of the unsteady medium. We also find that analytic solutions for simplified basin configurations provide an order of magnitude estimate of the expected frequency modulation effect. Finally, the importance of this phenomenon in natural situations is discussed. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2803349

Effects of Valve Closing Law and Unsteady Friction Model on Damping Pressure Waves in a Network
Water-hammer is a transient condition which may occur in a network as a result of rapid or slow valve closures, pump failures, changes in turbine loading, etc. It creates high and low pressure waves which travel along the system and decay as a result of wall shear stress. Comparison o experimental and theoretical results revealed the failure of steady or quasi-steady models in correctly predict...

متن کاملEstimation of Hydrodynamic Forces on the Cylinderical Smooth Piles to Random Waves and Currents
Most Codes such as API and BSI recommend Morison’s equation to estimate hydrodynamic forces on offshore structures. Significant differences exist among these Codes due to using different methods of analysis and estimation of force coefficients. In this paper, data from full scale tests have been used to evaluate random waves and uniform current actions on the smooth piles. Four time and ...
متن کاملThe study of effective stress and pore water pressures in the foundation of a concrete gravity platform affected by loads due to waves, currents and wind in the Persian Gulf
It is proposed to use a single base platform in the Persian Gulf considering its low depth and more appropriate environmental conditions in comparison to North Sea and Mexico Gulf where this kind of platform is very popular. The pile of platform is responsible for transmission of environmental loads resulted from waves, currents, wind and dead loads to foundation of platform. Using SACS 5.3 sof...
متن کاملEstimation of Hydrodynamic Force on Rough Circular Cylinders in Random Waves and Currents (RESEARCH NOTE)
Most of the Codes of Practice (API, BSI, DnV, NPD) uses Morison's equation to estimate hydrodynamic loads on fixed and moving offshore structures. The significant difference in the prediction of the loads mainly arises from the assumption of the values of hydrodynamic coefficients. In this paper by analysing a full scale set of data in large KC's numbers collected from Delta Wave Flume in the N...
